5 different necessary components in your house workplace
We recently published an article on five key elements every freelancer or small business owner needs for their home office, but we quickly realized that we weren’t painting the whole picture!
At first glance, you might think all you need is a printer and a stapler, but the reality is that there is more to a home office than meets the eye. Before you take the plunge into becoming a full-time freelancer, there are a few other things you should consider to invest in to get the most out of your own workspace.
Of course, these two blogs aren’t meant to be a comprehensive list of everything a home office space needs, but we think this is a good place to start.
1. A second monitor
While some people find a second monitor a little distracting, for most jobs and tasks it can really make a huge difference and improve productivity. With this extra screen, you can multitask, get a clearer picture of your work, and keep many important windows open at once. If you use two monitors (we even know people who use three) you never come back to one.
2. A comfortable place to sit (or stand)
A good chair can make all the difference in the world. With the right support, you can prevent and resolve issues with your posture, shoulder pain, back cramps, and sciatica.
Some people even choose to avoid chairs or balance balls in order to use standing desks that they can use to get their work done on their feet. No matter what you choose, when you feel more comfortable at your desk, your work will improve, your productivity will increase, and you will see a difference in your health.
3. Attractive decor
Have you ever noticed that when you walk into a room that you find attractively decorated, your shoulders drop, your breathing deepens, and your general posture improves? Studies show that spending time in an attractive environment can actually improve our productivity.
Everyone has different tastes when it comes to interior design, but consider adding some houseplants, essential oil diffusers, artwork, and other decorative touches. Ideally, they will help you reduce stress and think more creatively – calmly.
4. A reliable combination of printer and scanner
It’s a common joke that the printer never seems to work when you need it most. If you work in a large office you can at least call the IT person to have a look, but if you work from a home office it’s all up to you. Even if you are mostly paperless, it is always a good idea to have a reliable printer / scanner combo available for customers and suppliers who don’t.
5. A strategy to get outside
When working from home, it can be tempting to stay around the clock for days. Why should you take off your pajamas for another day in the home office? This is a sneaky but harmful instinct. Getting dressed, getting outside, and getting fresh air and human contact can boost your mood and productivity.
