Google today launched AdSense Direct, a new tool for publishers who – as the name suggests – want to sell ads directly and are not big enough to deal with the complexities of DoubleClick for Publishers.

This puts it in direct competition with iSocket, BuySellAds and other services that make it easier for smaller publishers to sell ads directly. This is also Google’s first foray into this area of the advertising business for small publishers. After all, AdSense has always been about programmatically selecting ads to display on a particular website based on what the website is about and what Google knows about what a particular reader is likely to be interested in.

AdSense Direct, which is currently only available in the US, allows publishers to do business with individual advertisers, regardless of whether the publisher is with AdWords or not. Publishers can simply give potential advertisers a link to their AdSense Direct page, and all they have to do is upload their creative and pay for the ad.

Google cuts all AdSense Direct transactions by 15 percent. All Invoicing and billing is done via Google Wallet.

By the way, there are no upper or lower limits for the number of impressions that are delivered via one of these campaigns. Advertisers simply buy the space for a specific day or for a longer period of time, although campaigns cannot last longer than 90 days.

The more popular a website becomes, the more lucrative direct ad deals are than just serving simple AdSense ads. Google recommends a price when publishers set up a new campaign and the company says it is research showed that publishers can generally charge around 2.5 times the price of a standard contextual ad.
